The reason why I was thinking of the Mac Mini is that it's probably the cheapest way to get into a Mac without buying something used and being unsure of what shape it's in. I'm happy with my Mackie HDR24/96 and Reaper on my Pentium 4 running XP when I hafta use a computer DAW for something.

I'm not actually interested in using Pro Tools as my chosen means of production. Thanks, and thanks, Ken, too, for the vote of confidence. I think this is offset by the stability and consistency of osx, but either machine will work. But price wise, there is no debate with me that higher perfomance tower pc's are a bit cheaper, and tend towards the bleeding edge. A mini, 13 mbp and imac are pretty much the same internals in a different case. Ps-loved your NAMM thing- it turned me onto the new Casio synth, which looks the current mac mini's are more than enough for a studio machine, but, I would still lean towards a tower, due to the core options. Mac or pc, what we have access to for $1000 exceeds most of what every recording done more than 5 years ago had.

Like most technology now, it is really difficult to buy bad stuff. I always think this stuff boils down to the software you use, what your support circle is like ( ie are your peers using mac or pc) and whether you need to run other things. The better you treat them, the better they make you look as a man, driver or the current mac mini's are more than enough for a studio machine, but, I would still lean towards a tower, due to the core options. Macs are like a very beautiful woman, an extreme high performance car, or a top of the line guitar.
